Hello, I just got Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings through PlayOnLinux to play some LAN with my friends. However, no games show up and and if I try to create one it goes to the creating game screen for half a second and then goes back to the main menu. Also, we've tried using Internet TCP/IP Connection for DirectPlay, and I manually typed in the host machine name, but again, no dice. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Edit: I should also mention that LAN and TCP/IP Connection are the only connection types I have.
I also have done winetricks directplay, and it still isn't working. Edit2: I've solved it! Apparently after doing winetricks directplay all I needed to do was go to the PlayOnLinux Config and under install components choose DirectPlay! Thanks for the help people! Well, first of all, the LAN option can be a little finnicky. I've only sometimes seen games show up even on Windows. For a LAN game I generally use TCP/IP and just use the specified IP address to connect (type it in and hit 'show games').
Try a few network troubleshooting steps too, see if the machines can all ping one another. Also, check what's in the 'libraries' tab of winecfg, there should be the following entries dplayx(native, builtin) dpnet(native, builtin) dpnhphast(native, builtin) dpwsockx(native builtin) If not, try adding them.
Age of Empires 2 only supports Windows. PlayOnLinux is just a front end for Wine.
You either need to learn much more about Wine to work out what the problem is, or just install Windows. You should ask yourself:. How much do I make an hour?. How many hours do you think you would spend trying to get this to work?.
How much does a copy of Windows 10 cost?. ZENworks Suite. How much hard drive space do I have?
(Ie enough to dual boot)?. Or even 'Could I afford to buy a cheap windows laptop with windows 10 on it, just for this game?'
I've used Linux, Mac OSX, and Windows, each for years as my main desktop. First windows, then Linux, then Windows, then Mac OSX, then Linux, then Windows & Linux, then Mac OSX & Linux, and soon to be Windows. I'm not judging any of them in my previous post.
I'm simply stating that it will either work, or it won't. And if it does, the time it takes to get it to work has a time cost, and running it on windows natively has a financial cost. Currently I run my AoE2 in Wine on OSX, which is a similar situation to OP, so I feel entitled to make this point. I've found these days getting Windows into shape after installation is a huge timesink. It comes with almost no useful default apps or format support, and the drivers require several rounds of windows update reboots.
Age Of Empires 2 Patch
If you get it preinstalled, you probably have to rip out a bunch of OEM bloatware, and even after that, once you're up and running all the nuisance reboots and esoteric issues claw back any time you might've saved versus getting your Linux system working (which once working, generally stays working). And yeah, to your original point, running stuff through wine can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but I still find, for the 10-20% of my game library I'd run in Wine, I generally don't have to do too much. Install as normal, play as normal, if something doesn't work, google it, generally implement whatever solution or workaround in 5 minutes or so.

Only a few minor tweaks you need to do to make it work, this is assuming you have steam running through wine already. Install game 2. Cd to 'drivec/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Age2HD/' 3. Rename the 'Launcher.exe' to 'Launcher.bak' and 'AoK HD.exe' to 'Launcher.exe' 4. Inside of steam, add '-nostartup' to the launch options. If your cpu automatically downclocks, disable that. For me, it was 'sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance' 6.
Run the game, note that it will take several minutes to start up as the VS2012 redistributal and the directx fail to install, but it will run. I tried doing this by myself with Wine on OS X seems like I forgot step 3. Nice trick, and thanks a bunch! As a neater fix, it would be nice if there was a launch option to prevent running the launcher beforehand. Once I got the game running, I had to 'emulate a virtual desktop' in winecfg, because the game's window only covered a quarter of my screen but seemed to think I was using my native res. I then unchecked 'Full screen' to get it back into a window, then I quit the game and disabled using the virtual desktop in winecfg to get the game in a 'raw' X11 window. Not sure what to do about playing in full screen though By the way - you can avoid having to use a virtual desktop if you can get to the 'Full screen' checkbox in the Options.
